The production and distribution of methamphetamine is the most destructive illegal drug infecting our children of all ages today. It is a major cause of addiction to our children in every state of this country. Today, meth is second only to alcohol and marijuana as the drug used most frequently in many Western and Midwestern states.
Methamphetamine (meth) is a highly addictive, synthetically produced central nervous system stimulant with effects similar to cocaine. Meth is the most prevalent synthetic drug manufactured in the United States and is easily produced in clandestine laboratories using common store-bought materials.
Illicit production labs exist almost everywhere…in both city and rural areas, abandoned houses in the southwest, apartments anywhere, mountain cabins, beachfront resorts, to name a few. Common methods of use include smoking, snorting, injecting, swallowing.
The ingredients required for meth production are, for the most part, common household products… pseudoephedrine products (over the counter decongestants), camping fuel, Iodine, matches, coffee filters, rock salt, battery acid, pool acid.
Some methods of obtaining large amounts of pseudoephedrine include:
- Smurfing (multiple purchases at one location)
- Shelf-Sweeping (theft of all shelf stock)
- Shoplifting and theft from wholesalers.
Different federal and state agencies, along with law enforcement, have taken steps to limit the amount of pseudoephedrine that can be legally purchased at one time.
Physical Effects of Meth Use:
Addiction, psychotic behavior, death, severe brain damage, high blood pressure, seizures, skin ulcers, chronic fatigue, extreme anorexia, cardiac arrest, bad teeth, hepatitis, AIDS, herpes, tuberculosis, aggression, anxiety, confusion, insomnia, a number of psychotic features (including paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions).
One common delusion is the sensation of insects creeping on the skin, which is called “formication”. The paranoia can result in homicidal as well as suicidal thoughts.
The effects of methamphetamine can last up to 12 hours. Side effects include:
- Convulsions
- Dangerously lethal high body temperature
- Stroke
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Stomach cramps
- Shaking
During these Meth binges, users will inject as much as a gram of meth every 2 to 3 hours over several days until they run out of the drug or are too dazed to continue use.
Meth can cause damage to the brain that is detectable months after the use of the drug. The damage to the brain caused by methamphetamine use is similar to damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and epilepsy. Psychotic symptoms can sometimes persist for months or years after use has ceased. This is a nasty piece of work waiting for your children to discover it.
Law enforcement reports indicate that meth use is linked to child neglect, child and spousal abuse, sexual abuse, homicide, property crimes, and mail and check fraud.
Please note that a large number of the street terms listed below are innocent, normal words used in everyday language…coffee, bling, chalk, Christmas tree, cinnamon, load of laundry, pink, spackle, trash, wash, work, etc. You might not even think twice when you hear those terms in your children’s conversations. Those who sell drugs use common, benign terms to cover up the actual menace of what they are selling to your children. Be aware! Protect your children.
