OxyContin™ – No Pain, No Brain

OxyContin, a powerful prescription pain reliever, is a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. It has the same properties as heroin and is just as addictive. This prescription pain killer contains Oxycodone (Trade Names: Tylox®, Percodan®, OxyContin®). Abuse of OxyContin is a straight path to severe addiction for both adults and adolescents.

Many people, including impressionable teens, believe that pills are safer than “street drugs” such as heroin or cocaine. Prescription drugs are safe only when used under a doctor’s care and according to directions on the label. When prescription drugs are purchased and used illegally they become “street drugs” and are every bit as dangerous as any drug purchased illegally.

One very serious danger, without considering addiction at all, is the purity of any drug purchased from a student in the cafeteria at school, from a “guy” on the street corner, from a friend at a party. The purchaser has no idea what those drugs actually contain, or the safe dosage.

Drug dealers do not care if their product is safe for your use at all. They are only interested in the money they make from you future addicts. Dealers sell to younger and younger children to create a steady source of income for years. Some of these street drugs have been laced with animal urine, strychnine or gasoline and there’s no way the purchaser would know it. “If they look okay, they must be okay” is a stupid concept. Think about it! Your addiction is their future!

OxyContin, being a CNS depressant like heroin, will cause changes in your breathing, making it slow down to a very dangerous point that can lead to sudden death if you stop breathing. Since this drug has the same effect on the user’s body that heroin does, users tend to switch back and forth, depending on availability, which doubles the addiction possibilities.

OxyContin is an opioid and taking a large single dose can cause breathing to shut down, or even death. Combining opioids, such as OxyContin and alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates or benzodiazepines almost make sudden death a certainty. These substances all slow breathing and their combined effects are equal to a double dose of “downers.”  Any combination could definitely lead to life-threatening respiratory depression (You stop breathing).

When abusers get their hands on the time-release version of OxyContin, they remove the sustained-release coating to get the whole dose at one time. To them, the “rush” is the goal and not a thought is given to the possible damage an accelerated shot of the drug might do to them. There’s a lot of dead adolescents and adults to prove that statement.
